The role of a life coach is not to offer advice unless the client explicitly requests it. I believe that individuals possess an inherent awareness of their dreams and desires, alongside a comprehension of the barriers that impede them. Nevertheless, there are times when we hesitate to take action due to fears of being perceived as foolish, selfish, or otherwise misguided. For instance, I once had a female patient who was overwhelmed by her role in fashion merchandising. Although she believed she was managing the stress effectively, she frequently reported headaches, neck pain, fatigue, and anxiety and it became clear to me these symptoms were, at least in part, due to stress.
After several more visits for similar health complaints, I finally just blurted out - "You need a new job!" I did not anticipate that she would take my suggestion so seriously, but then again, aren't you supposed to trust your healthcare provider? Sure enough, at her next appointment, she announced, "Guess what - I quit my job!" My immediate reaction was one of concern; I envisioned her living in a cardboard box, living in fleece pajamas, and feeding her dog ramen noodles—all due to my suggestion.
Flash forward one year. After leaving that soul-sucking job, she and her husband designed a line of blue jeans. Soon, the brand was promoted by Nordstrom, then stores all over the country. Even Oprah was buying them! After working the business for several years, they sold the company and she retired in her 40s to do whatever she wanted to do the rest of her life.
It is undoubtedly daunting to relinquish what is secure, well-paying, and comfortable. However, what opportunities might you overlook due to a lack of energy, time, or health to explore alternative options? While I recommend formulating a plan before making a significant leap—perhaps considering a parachute or a safety net—do not hesitate to begin exploring possibilities. Otherwise, what might you be missing?
